“Yayu” is a word in Amharic, the official language of Ethiopia. It comes from the root verb “to see”, thus having a variety of meaning ranging from viewing, observing, perceiving, having knowledge, experiencing, discerning, to distinguishing. All of these meanings describe what Yayu restaurant is all about!
Growing up in Ethiopia, we viewed and observed how Ethiopian unique and authentic cuisines were prepared. We acquired the knowledge to prepare them. After coming to the San Francisco Bay Area, we had the opportunity to turn our knowledge into experience by actually preparing Ethiopian food for several years.

Adding a personal touch to Yayu is the fact that it is made up from the actual names of the two cherished members of the family belonging to the next generation. It is our hope and desire that they will also “see” what their rich Ethiopian heritage has to offer them so that, together with their American heritage, they will be able to enrich their community by offering the best of both worlds!
Yayu’s logo is made up using Amharic letters Ya written as
ያ and Yu written as ዩ . We came up with our logo by combining the two letters.
